Hi,

Some time ago you gave me some code to insert in the backend of the J51 Privilege template, to give a warning to a visitor that they are using an out of date browser. Here it is:

<!--[if lte IE 7]>
<style type="text/css">
#ie6msg{border:3px solid #eee; background:#fff; padding:20px;color:#000;
margin:100px auto; width: 600px;}
#ie6msg h4{margin: 8px; padding:0;}
#ie6msg p{margin: 8px; padding:0;}
#ie6msg p a.getie7{font-weight:bold; color:#006;}
#ie6msg p a.ie6expl{font-weight:bold; color:#006;}
#body_bg {display:none;}
</style>
<div id="ie6msg">
<h4>Did you know that your browser is out of date?</h4>
<p>Consequently, some of the website content may not be displayed properly. Please upgrade your browser to improve your browsing
experience. We strongly recommend upgrading to either <a
href="http://www.getfirefox.com/";>Firefox</a>, <a
href="http://www.opera.com/";>Opera</a>, <a
href="http://www.apple.com/safari/";>Safari</a>, <a
href="http://www.google.com/chrome";>Google Chrome</a>, or a more recent
version of <a
href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx";>Internet
Explorer</a>.</p>
<![endif]-->

On my own old version of IE the warning displays properly, but rather worryingly I'm getting complaints from clients that the website is misaligned and there is no top menu on their versions of IE, but they are not seeing any warning that they are using an out of date version of IE.

Can you advise me further? Do we simply need to tweek the code, so that all older versions of IE can read the error message?

Thanks,

David G

Hi David

Which versions of IE would you like to cover with the warning?

Hi Ciaran,

I've now seen the site on a version of I E 8, and it's not right, but the Problem I have is that I can't view the site through all available browsers, so I don't know where it works and where it doesn't.

Best wishes,

David G

To use the same code to target IE8 you can use something like the following...

<!--[if IE 8 ]>
<style type="text/css">
#ie6msg{border:3px solid #eee; background:#fff; padding:20px;color:#000;
margin:100px auto; width: 600px;}
#ie6msg h4{margin: 8px; padding:0;}
#ie6msg p{margin: 8px; padding:0;}
#ie6msg p a.getie7{font-weight:bold; color:#006;}
#ie6msg p a.ie6expl{font-weight:bold; color:#006;}
#body_bg {display:none;}
</style>
<div id="ie6msg">
<h4>Did you know that your browser is out of date?</h4>

Thank you Ciaran,

I've pasted the code into the CSS code area of the template.

Is there any way I can test the look of this website on other browsers, or do I have to wait until people point out the problem to us, which is embarrasing at best and commercially damaging at worst. Is there a handy piece of software that allows a developer to view the site on older versions of IE and on other browsers?

Thanks,

David G

Also, can I assume that the code you've given me, which gives the error message on IE 8 will give the same message on earlier versions of IE?

Thanks

Hi,

I've just spoken to a client who is viewing our site using IE 9.08112.16421 on Windows 7 and what she is describing the web pages as the most appalling mess!

Now, you've given me code to display an error message but this obviously isn't suitable for such a recent version of IE, since it's only one version behind the most recent. Is there a solution to this very serious problem?

Regards,

David G

Hi

There is a number of cross browser checking services available. Following are some of the more popular...

http://www.browserstack.com/
https://www.saucelabs.com/
http://html.adobe.com/edge/inspect/

Code will only effect the browser version linked in its first line (<!--[if IE 8 ]>;).

Would you have a URL to this site?

Your site appears to be fine in IE9 however there is some issues with IE8 caused by your browser warning code. You mentioned that the site was not appearing correctly in IE8 hence why you wish to have the browser warning. In what way was it not appearing correctly? The template by default is compatible with IE8.

I have seen the site on a version of IE 8 with the text misaligned and the thumnails shifted down the page. The client who is viewing the site in IE 9 is giving me a similar description and telling me that she has no menus.

Ok, I've just had a helpful conversation with the client who is viewing the site through IE version 9:

She gave the following info:

The tab to the right of the main screen is buried below the scrolling images in the Autson Slideshow. The top menus must also be underneath the slideshow and the small Facebook and Twitter icons are not visible.

The scrolling images seem to be working and the captions are appearing correctly.

The text of the lead article is half on the white panel and half off. The thumbnail grid appears to be in the correct position and the images expand properly when clicked.

In the bottom left position the html custom module, which has the text beginning with: 'To discover more ....' is off the white panel and in the left margin.

The three hover images at the bottom of the page are not live. The images are faded, even before the user hovers over them and when she clicks on each one, nothing happens. Consequently we can't see if there are further issues with the embedded articles. Also, the three hovers should be in a horizontal line, evenly spaced, but there are two in line and one underneath the other two.

I really hope you can resolve this very worrying problem.

Thanks

Are these same issues present if you remove any code added?

It might be worth considering using a 3rd party plugin for your browser warnings. Simply copying code from one template to another can cause any amount of problems and conflicts. One option would be something like http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/browsers-a-web-standards/20111

I've deleted the code from the Custom Code area of the template and have spoken to the client and the problem persists.

I understand what you are saying about using a third party plug-in for the warnings, but this doesn't seem like a solution. It doesn't seem very satisfactory to put warnings on each browser that encounters serious problems, particularly when it's not that old, such as this client's IE version 9.

Are you able to correct the problems of misalignment, etc.

True.. I just wanted to ensure that these problems you are having are not related to any changes made to the template rather than the template itself. May I suggest sending temporary administration access to your Joomla installation to info@joomla51.com and we will examine this issue further. For our reference please paste a link to this post in your email

Thank you David

Are you using any extensions specific to this page that may be conflicting with your template... http://www.oxfordcitywalk.co.uk/index.php/oxford-showcase ? This appears to be the only page with an issue in IE9. All other pages appear to be fine.

You can test your site for IE9 by opening your site in IE10 and hitting F12, from the 'Browser Mode' dropdown select 'Internet Explorer 9'.

Hi Ciaran,

I'm not aware of any plug-in. While you have access to the backend you may want to have a look.

Hi,

I've taken your advice an viewed the site from my IE10 in earlier versions in browser mode and all the pages are wrong, except when viewed in IE10.

As a temporary measure I've had to adjust the custom code at the backend of the template to display a warning about the browser being out of date to all visitors who are using IE9 or earlier versions. This is not great, particularly when IE10 was only released in 2012.

Please can you help with this?

Hi Ciaran,

In addition to my last two posts, could you have a look at the backend of the site and tell me the sort of plug-ins that may be causing the conflict, because most of the plugins I don't recognise and if I delete them it may cause some irreparable damage to the site.

Best wishes,

David G
