1.) How do I get local google fonts to show up when I edit articles? It only shows the standard dozen or so generic fonts? I tried to follow the instructions and it didn't work and also the code is different.
2.) On the left side of the homepage slideshow there are the vertical words "Great Design Starts Here". Where do I edit those words? (ANSWERED)

Regarding your second question: Edit the tab 'Page display' for the menu item of the home page (or any other menu item, where you encounter the issue). It should show up similar to this:
Set 'Show Page Heading' to 'Hide'. Remove the entries for 'Page Heading' and 'Page Class'.

Regarding your question 1:
I'm pretty sure that it is not possible to use Google fonts (even if they are installed locally) in a standard Joomla editor like TinyMCE or JCE.
What you can do: Save your article. After that, Joomla 4 will offer a preview of your page. And there you get the "correct" fonts.

TitleMaybe you misunderstand something: Of course you can use Google Fonts - to be displayed in the frontend of your website. I do that on all my websites. Moreover, I host the Google fonts on my own webspace (to avoid data privacy issues in the EU).
But this does not imply that you can use Google fonts in the backend of Joomla. Whether you can use those in the backend, is not a question regarding the frontend template, SKYLAR.
Instead, it is a question regarding your Joomla editor. In principle, it should be possible to use Google fonts in TinyMCE and/or JCE (although I've never done this and didn't feel any need to do so).
For JCE, you might take a look at https://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/support/forum/97161-google-fonts-in-jce.
For TinyMCE at https://www.tiny.cloud/blog/tinymce-custom-font-family .
