A Renovate site was hacked last week. I changed hosts, reinstalled the template and extensions, exported the database and imported it to the new database area. I hooked it up, had the new host scan it for malware and it was ok. Then I changed the DNS last night. Woke up this morning with an alert from new host that it had malware again. I had installed 3.4.8 instead of the most recent Joomla version because that was the version on the old site but then I neglected to update to the latest Joomla before I went to bed. The report shows lot of “suspicious elements” on the template and modules that came with it. Is there a newer version of Renovate I should install when I do this process all over again but with the latest version of Joomla?

Hello

I am somewhat surprised you got hacked again so quickly as Joomla 3.4.8 would be quite secure. I suspect there may be another reason why the hackers got back in to your server. Possibly a backdoor left somewhere during the original hack? Unchanged password on an account (FTP)? Might be worth getting your host to run an exploit scanner (ConfigServer eXploit Scanner) if that option is available.

The only recent updates to our Renovate template has been for some minor styling changes so updating the template although wont do any harm is not essential.

I know, I was surprised too and it's really frustrating. I'm going to do it all over again and change some passwords. The only consolation is that it's not a paying client but my own business partner and she can't ring up and scream at me.

:).. well that does make life a little easier however hacks are indeed always very frustrating. Unfortunately extreme measures are often the best solution and do save work in the long run. Good luck!
