On Nadia template I would like to make the showcase module full width and use that instead of the built in header position for a video. how can I do that without affecting the header/menu width? Thanks

Hello

To amend try adding the following to the Custom CSS field of your templates parameters (Extensions -> Templates -> [YourTemplateStyle] -> Custom CSS)....

#container_slideshow .wrapper960 {

    width: 100%;

}

That didn't help. Can I somehow make the slideshow area a module that can display a fullwidth video?

Would you have a URL to an example of your showcase module? As showcase is a module position, any module can be placed in this area (https://extensions.joomla.org/tags/video-players-gallery/).
